SKINS

"As a bodhrán maker with over 20 years experience and having made more than 8000 bodhrans, carried out countless experiments with synthetic and natural skins from a variety of animals as well as a multiple and a combination of drum skins. Working natural skins in itself requires much experience, fingertip sensitivity and expertise, as goatskins are composed of 7 different structures each of which have different characteristics.

"Our drumskins are manufactured by an experienced tanner who places great emphasis on cleanliness. The company has been in the tanning industry for over 600 years. We use bodhran skins which come exclusively from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and mostly we use Swiss mountain goatskins. I am always very aware that I am dealing with part of a living creature and therefore this work demands respectful handling."

Natural Skin

"DRAGONSkin spicy: Here we use thicker skins from older animals (3-7 years old). These are then sanded to medium thickness. This means that the portion of the harder outer skin layer is greater. In addition, the intensity of the DRAGONSkin procedure is shortened. The result is a DRAGONSkin with a harder attack, more punch even at louder sessions, but still with that creamy DRAGONSkin sound character."

Synthetic Skin

REMO Skyntone® (synthetic)

"Extremely stable in tuning and an authentic alternative to natural skins. If you want an uncomplicated drumhead for use on stage or for playing outdoors, or if you are a vegan - this drumhead is a genuine alternative to animal hide. If tuned correctly, this drumhead is able to impress even the most demanding listener. Moreover, it remains virtually unaffected by climatic conditions and hand perspiration."

Wood

"It's figured ash, it usually comes from eastern parts of Europe like Romania, Bosnia, Croatia, Slowenia, but sometimes you can find it also in parts of Germany, Austria.I get it from a tone wood supplier who is a friend of mine and is searching suitable tree trunks for me. They are very rare and it's really hard to get it. I always have then to buy the whole trunk without seeing it from the inside, I totally need to rely on my friend's experience and knowledge.

"The trunk is then cut into smaller pieces, get air-dried, then cut into planks, get technically dried, then cut into layers and finally get sanded to exact thickness for drum shell layers. The whole procedure from tree to frame usually takes 2-3 years. Figured ash has become now one of my favorite woods for drum frames as its not only technically perfect to work with, but also so beautiful."

Tuning System

“Today, tunable bodhrans have many components such as reinforcement frames, tuning pegs, pressure screws, tuning screws, and holding screws which influence the drum's vibrational behaviour through their own natural vibrations. Depending on construction and material, natural vibrations can build up or cancel each other out; they can become amplified or dampened. This can lead to an overall unbalanced frequency spectrum.

“The isolatHED works by using rubber-encased pressure screws that are embedded in the tuning rim. This preserves the possibilities of a multi-point tuning system without dampening the tuning rim or causing it to "float." As a result, the brilliance of sound is significantly improved, and the frequency spectrum becomes much more

homogeneous. As less energy is absorbed by the main frame, there is also a measurable increase in loudness.”

QUESTIONS

1) If someone wants my sound "exactly" but prefers a larger drum. Is it possible?

"Pretty much. It's just that the larger the drum, the longer the skin can resonate and the louder it becomes as it can resonate not only longer but also wider (larger swinging hub).

With the natural skins I select thinner, more flexible skins for smaller diameter, and thicker and bit stiller ones for the larger diameter to level out this behaviours and get so a more even sound.

"With synthetic heads I strive to level-out this with different taping techniques of the black tape around the bearing edge."

2) What is the sound quality from having a larger drum that is more shallow?

"A larger drum with shallow frame gives a more "open", spreader sound, maybe a bit "wilder" and so more "traditional". A smaller drum with deeper frame gives a shorter, more precise and more compressed sound. Maybe also more "tonal, defined"."

3) What is the sound quality from having a larger drum that is the same depth as mine?

"The larger the louder and longer vibrating. The main difference is actually the bass behavior.

Larger drums produce a more "roaring", "traveling" bass, while smaller drums have a more punchy, shorter and more defined bass like on a kick drum."

4) What is your favourite part of the whole process?

"I like the combination of traditional handcrafted woodworking and using modern production technology like CNC milling. These new technologies open up a whole world of new possibilities and bring so back old handcrafting techniques used in a new way. It makes my everyday work more interesting and diversified. With the surface finishing I always strive to bring out the natural beauty of the wood to not only protect the surface, but also emphasize the grown beauty."

5) What sizes are available?

Three diameters:

  • 35 cm

  • 37 cm

  • 40 cm

Three depths:

  • 13 cm

  • 14 cm (standard)

  • 15 cm

You can customise the diameter and depth to best suit you!

6) What is my size?

35cm x 14cm
